The Kolkata Police has arrested three people for allegedly assaulting a doctor and vandalising the trauma care unit of the city’s SSKM Medical College and Hospital after one of their relatives died at the hospital during treatment.
According to the police, a 15-year-old child died during treatment at the hospital following which his relatives assaulted the on-duty doctor and also vandalised the trauma care unit facility on Sunday (August 18).
The incident came against the backdrop of ongoing protests by the medical fraternity against the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital earlier this month.
After the incident, a case was filed at a local police station in Kolkata under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against the accused identified as Jaynal Abedin, Monuddin and Md Muzahidin.
“The brief fact of the case is that on August 18 at about 4 pm, the accused persons, being the relatives of a patient, ransacked the government property on the fourth floor of Trauma Care Centre under orthopaedics Unit-III of IPGME&R-SSKM Hospital after hearing the information of sudden collapse of their patient who was admitted and was receiving treatment…,” a complaint by a senior doctor by the hospital.
When one of the on-duty doctors, Dr Subrata Sur, tried to intervene, he was also assaulted by the accused, the FIR said.
The accused also assaulted police personnel of the hospital and also stopped them from discharging their duties, the complaint further added.
After the complaint, all three accused were arrested by the police and further investigation into the case was on.
