Dibrugarh: Assam Medical College in Dibrugarh(AMC), the oldest medical facility in the northeast, is set to introduce robotic surgery, superintendent Dr Dhrubajyoti Bhuyan announced on Sunday, during the institution’s 78th foundation day. Established in 1947, AMC was earlier called the Berry White Medical School, after it was founded by Dr John Berry White in 1900.
“AMC has always been a pioneer in the healthcare, research and innovation sector. Introduction of robotic surgery will be a transformative leap and will not only improve the quality of surgeries, but will also significantly reduce recovery time for patients. The state-of-the-art facility will also enhance our healthcare delivery capabilities,” Dr Bhuyan said.
He also spoke about the college’s existing initiatives, including dedicated helpline numbers, for suicide prevention and addressing medicine side effects.
Meanwhile, AMC’s foundation day celebrations began with the hoisting of the institution’s flag by principal Dr Sanjeeb Kakati, who reflected on the college’s arduous journey towards becoming a centre of excellence. “Our history is filled with challenges, but it is through perseverance that we have achieved our current standing in the medical community,” Dr Kakati stated.
An open session at the Dr John Berry White auditorium featured faculty members, students and staff, where the principal presented the annual report.
The event included felicitation of distinguished alumni and recognition of MBBS toppers, followed by a cultural programme.
