Bhubaneswar: Ankura Hospital for Women and Children, Bhubaneswar along with the International Microwave Ablation Academy (IMAA) and Nuvarium Medical Academy conducted a highly specialised international workshop on Gynaecologic Microwave Ablation. Expert gynaecologic minimally invasive surgeons, Dr Xiaoming Gong from China, and Dr Suyash Naval from India conducted the workshop.

Dr GSS Mohapatra, Head, Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgeries and Endometriosis, Ankura Hospital for Women and Children, Bhubaneswar, was the organising chairman of the event. Explaining gynaecologic MWA, he said, “Microwave Ablation therapy is a wonderful, super micro-invasive technique to destroy fibroids and adenomyosis. Fibroids are benign tumours of the uterus that may cause pain and excessive bleeding. They are also responsible for infertility in women planning their pregnancies. Adenomyosis is a very painful condition of the uterus where endometrium-like tissue is deposited outside the endometrium and in the myometrium. Hence women with adenomyosis have severe pain, and bleeding and experience recurrent miscarriages as well.”

Dr Mohapatra further added, “For women who do not want a cut on the uterus, or who want to preserve the uterus, especially for future pregnancies, MWA proves to be a fantastic technique. In this, an antenna is introduced into the fibroid or adenomyosis tissue, which is then destroyed in less than one second by safely raising the temperature to more than 65 degrees. The insertion of the antenna is guided by laparoscopy and/or ultrasound (LUMWA). MWA thus allows the fibroids and adenomyosis to be treated with no cuts, minimal pain and bleeding, almost no wound, and fast recovery. We have used open hysterectomies and minimally invasive laparoscopic surgeries for the treatment of such conditions till now. MWA is a super-minimally invasive technique and is the next generation treatment for fibroids and adenomyosis which are very common in women.”This futuristic technique brings a ray of hope for the many women who suffer silently with adenomyosis and fibroids, that not only cause debility but also despair over conceiving a child.
