Kolkata: Leader of Opposition in West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari wrote a letter to President Droupadi Murmu requesting her to withdraw or forfeit the prestigious President’s Police Medal conferred upon Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal, in the wake of RG Kar Medical College incident. Adhikari wrote a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the same issue.
Adhikari, attaching his letter to the President of India, posted in his X Handle, “I have written a letter to the Hon’ble President of India Smt. Droupadi Murmu Ji requesting her to withdraw/forfeit the prestigious President’s Police Medal and Police Medal conferred upon Shri Vineet Goyal; IPS, (West Bengal: RR – 1994), presently Commissioner of Police, Kolkata, in connection with his reprehensible, deplorable and shameful conduct during the course of investigations into the rape and murder of the Resident Doctor of RG Kar Medical College, Kolkata.”
“His complicity in the destruction of material evidence and deliberate inaction during the vandalism at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on the night of 14th August, 2024 has been well documented in the media…,” Adhikari alleged in his post.
Meanwhile, the Calcutta High Court on Thursday directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to file a report by September 18 on detestable and derogatory posts on social media regarding the junior doctor who was raped and murdered in the premises of R G Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.
The Division Bench of Chief Justice, TS Sivagnanam and Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharyya observed that such posts were unacceptable and noted that derogatory comments, which have been made with the photograph of the victim.
Mathabhanga incident
Three persons have been arrested in connection with violence on a person, who was allegedly assaulted, by members of the Trinamool Congress. Pradyut Saha, a CPI-M branch secretary and Mathabhanga municipality employee, was reportedly assaulted during “Reclaim the Night” organised by the West Bengal Democratic Writers’ and Artistes’ Association and the People’s Theatre Association .
Moksedul Islam, a CPI(M) district committee member, claimed that Trinamool activists attempted to disrupt the protest by threatening the participants and forced them to erase their artwork. When Saha objected, he was allegedly beaten by ruling party workers.

Allegation by parents
Allegations against police have become murkier amid the deceased Medical student’s parents that police tried to bribe them even before the last rites were performed. Trinamool Congress Minister and spokesperson Sashi Panja denied allegations on Thursday after parents,
During “Reclaim the Night” and candle-light march, the girl’s parents participated and claimed that there was an attempt to bribe them by DC-North in their home, when the body of the deceased PGT medical student was still at home. “We had kept the body on the first floor. DC-North took me inside my residence. We felt miserable. After my daughter’s death, when we waited outside they did not allow us to see the body,” the deceased girl’s father claimed.
Panja and Kolkata Police released the same video where the parents had said nobody offered money to the parents. They alleged that police have pressurised them to say this on the video.
“Till the last rites were not performed, 300-400 policemen surrounded us but after the last rites, there was no one,” the deceased girl’s aunt, who was also in RG Kar with the family, said.
