New Delhi: Amid the growing nationwide outrage, the Calcutta high court on Tuesday ordered a CBI probe into the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at city’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, news agency ANI reported.

The court also asked the police to hand over all the documents related to the case to the central probe agency immediately.

The HC also urged the agitating doctors to call off ceasework saying that have a ‘pious obligation’ on the part of doctors to treat their patients.

The body of a post-graduate trainee, who was reportedly raped and murdered inside a seminar hall at RG Kar Hospital, was found on Friday morning. A civic volunteer was arrested in connection with the case on Saturday.

Earlier in the day, the high court had directed the West Bengal government to present the investigation’s case diary before it at 1pm.

During the hearing, the high court expressed grave concern over the hospital authorities’ handling of the case, noting significant lapses on the part of the hospital administration, which should have filed the case.

The trainee’s parents had approached the high court, seeking a court-monitored investigation into the incident.

Several other Public Interest Litigations (PILs) were also filed, calling for a CBI investigation.

Resident doctors at government hospitals nationwide staged protests over the incident, with those in West Bengal and Delhi launching an indefinite strike, disrupting OPD services and non-emergency surgeries.

The strike was initiated in response to a call from the Federation of Resident Doctors’ Association (FORDA), which stated that the “strike won’t end until justice is served and our demands are met.”
