Lucknow: Taking note of a complaint related to the death of a woman due to alleged medical negligence, King George’s Medical University (KGMU) on Sunday initiated a disciplinary inquiry against an ENT surgeon, who allegedly persuaded the family members of the patient to get the surgery done at a private hospital.
The probe will investigate the medical negligence and private practice charges against the doctor.
The family of Poonam Maurya, 32, has filed a complaint with the Madheyganj police station and KGMU administration.
Poonam, a resident of Lakhimpur, had initially visited KGMU for treatment, but her family claims she was persuaded by the doctor to undergo surgery at a private hospital in Khadra, where her condition deteriorated, ultimately leading to her death.
According to the complaint, Poonam’s husband, Surendra Singh, brought her to KGMU on Sep 23 with a throat issue.
She was examined by an ENT specialist, who allegedly informed them of a long wait for admission at KGMU and suggested faster treatment at a private hospital. Though initially reluctant, Surendra claimed he was eventually persuaded after the doctor reportedly made repeated calls, warning of potential health risks if the surgery was delayed.
The operation was conducted at the private hospital on Oct 25, with the KGMU doctor allegedly present during the procedure. Surendra stated that his wife was admitted around 1 pm, and the surgery began at 5 pm. Shortly after the operation commenced, Poonam reportedly began experiencing severe pain.
Surendra further alleged that the hospital lacked essential oxygen cylinders, leaving the medical team unprepared when her condition worsened. As Poonam’s condition deteriorated, the hospital administration advised transferring her back to KGMU for ventilator support.
Poonam was then taken directly to Shatabdi Phase II at KGMU and placed on a ventilator that same night, bypassing the standard protocol that requires admission through the trauma centre. Despite efforts over several days, she could not survive.
Prof KK Singh, KGMU’s spokesperson, confirmed that a departmental investigation has been ordered to examine the allegations of the doctor’s private practice and potential ethical violations. He added, “The doctor in question joined the ENT department on a bond as a senior resident for a three-month term. We are gathering all relevant facts. If the complaint is found to be true, strict action will be taken.”
Additional DCP Central, Manisha Singh, stated that a report has been requested from the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) to aid in the investigation. “Further action will be taken based on the findings of the report,” she said.
