Star New Zealand batter Devon Conway has been granted a casual contract by New Zealand Cricket (NZC) to allow him to participate in the SA20 2025. Notably, Conway confirmed his availability for all international fixtures apart from six white-ball games against Sri Lanka in January 2025.
The decision to grant him a casual contract was taken due to his commitment to represent New Zealand for all the matches after January, informed NZC. Speaking on his decision, Conway thanked NZC for their support and called playing for New Zealand the pinnacle.
“Firstly, I’d like to thank New Zealand Cricket for their support through this process. The decision to move away from a central playing contract isn’t one I’ve taken lightly, but I believe it is the best for me and my family at this present time. Playing for the BLACKCAPS is still the pinnacle for me and I’m hugely passionate about representing New Zealand and winning games of international cricket,” said Conway in a video released by NZC.
“I’m excited to be part of the upcoming Test squads for an important period in the ICC World Test Championship cycle and am looking forward to being involved in the ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan next February if selected,” he added.
Meanwhile, youngster Finn Allen has turned down the central contract to focus on franchise cricket and hasn’t been offered any casual contract. The 25-year-old will remain available for the team and his selection for upcoming squads will be made on a case-by-case basis, informed NZC.
The cricket board will further announce replacements for the duo in the central contract list. New Zealand cricket CEO Scott Weenink revealed that the board was delighted with Conway’s commitment towards New Zealand cricket.
We’re delighted with Devon’s decision to commit to the BLACKCAPS: NZC CEO
“We’re delighted with Devon’s decision to commit to the BLACKCAPS – he’s a quality player who’s made a strong contribution to the team over the past few years,” said Weenink.
Further speaking ahead Weenink highlighted the importance of having flexibility in the current cricket tournament to retain their best players.
“In the current environment it’s important to have flexibility in our system to navigate some of the challenges posed by franchise cricket – and this is another example of how we’re working hard to retain our best players,” he added.
Kane Williamson opted out of contract in June
Earlier, fast bowler Trent Boult opted out of the national contract in 2022. However, the seamer represented the country in the ODI World Cup 2023 and T20 World Cup 2024. All-rounder James Neesham also denied the contract in 2022.
Former New Zealand captain Kane Williamson also opted out of central contract earlier this year after his team’s shocking first stage exit from the T20 World Cup 2024. Fast bowler Lockie Ferguson had also indicated that he wouldn’t be accepting the central contract after the T20 World Cup.
