In yet another personal attack on US Vice President Kamala Harris, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump disparaged her physical appearance and intelligence at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday.
“I am much better looking than her,” Trump told supporters, as quoted by The Hill. “I’m a better-looking person than Kamala.”
The former President referenced a recent Time Magazine cover featuring Harris, claiming that the magazine had to hire a sketch artist because her photographs did not work out. He also questioned Harris’s intelligence and described her as a “radical liberal.”
Trump’s attack on Harris was one of many he made against her and other Democratic leaders during the rally. Talking about her eleventh-hour entry in the presidential race, he jibed, “What happened to Biden? I was running against Biden and now I’m running against someone else. I said, who am I running against, Harris? I said, ‘Who the hell is Harris?’”
This latest verbal assault follows Trump’s assertion that he feels “entitled to personal attacks” on his Democratic rival. Despite warnings from his party and advisers, the former President continues to use unflattering nicknames for Harris, including “Kamabla,” “Lyin’ Kamala,” and “Laffin Kamala.”
Trump has stepped up his aggressive rhetoric ever since polls showed Harris gaining ground in critical battleground states, like Pennsylvania – where he survived an assassination attempt.
Pennsylvania will play a key role in deciding the final result under the US electoral college system. Harris is scheduled to visit Pennsylvania on Sunday, before heading to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
The convention, which opens on Monday, will feature keynote speeches from party leaders like Biden and former President Barack Obama. Harris will deliver her own speech on Thursday evening to formally accept the party nomination.
The momentum in the White House race has shifted significantly since Joe Biden’s abrupt withdrawal from the race on July 21. Harris’s entry has energised the Democratic Party base, and polls show the head-to-head race between her and Trump to be very close.
