Panaji: State epidemiologist Utkarsh Betodkar on Monday said there is no need to panic as human metapneumovirus (HMPV) symptoms are similar to influenza and common viral flu.
The directorate of health services will intensify surveillance of severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) and influenza-like illness (ILI). The disease, which has been in the news following its outbreak in China, Betodkar said, has been around since 2001.
“This virus is prevalent worldwide and not alone in China. It is more common during winter months, and its symptoms can range from mild to severe, especially in children below five years of age, those aged 60 and above, and people with weakened immune systems,” he said.
He advised against self-medicating for cold and flu symptoms, urging patients to consult doctors for proper treatment. Betodkar clarified that the general population need not wear masks due to concerns about this virus.
“The individuals who are suffering from the flu have to wear masks so that it doesn’t spread to others. Healthcare workers and the ones who have co-morbid conditions should wear masks while in crowded places. It is suggested irrespective of HMPV,” he added.
Betodkar said India has not seen any fatal cases of HMPV. He further said that if Goa sees any possible HMPV cases, then the samples will be sent to the National Institute of Virology, Pune.
Meanwhile, health minister Vishwajit Rane told media persons that Goa has not yet received any directives regarding HMPV. He further stated that the health department would enforce such guidelines when received.
