Lucknow: The first robotic bariatric surgery of Apollomedics Superspeciality Hospital, Lucknow, was done on a 38-year-old patient suffering from morbid obesity recently.

Dr Ankur Saxena, who conducted the surgery with his team, said: “This is the region’s first robotic bariatric surgery. The patient weighed over 100kg and was suffering from diabetes and hypertension.”

He added that: “Robotic sleeve gastrectomy significantly aids weight loss and offers a high likelihood of reversing diabetes and controlling hypertension. The patient has lost 10kg within 15 days post-surgery.”

Hospital MD and CEO, Dr Mayank Somani, said: “Obesity is a crucial contributor to morbidity and complications. With loss in weight, diabetes reversal and effective hypertension control is possible. In addition to this, the patient benefitted from the precision of robotic surgery.”

The experts noted that despite its benefits, bariatric surgery adoption rates remain low in this region with only 10% of eligible patients opting for treatment.
