Visakhapatnam: Visakha Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS) set up a 20-bed special ward on Thursday to treat suspected human meta pneumovirus (HMPV) cases. VIMS director Dr Rambabu said that the high-flow nasal cannulas (delivering 60 litre of oxygen per minute), that were prepared during the Covid-19 period, have also been readied.
“Necessary medications have been made available. People are advised not to believe the rumours circulating about this virus, as it is not life-threatening and typically presents symptoms similar to those of the common flu,” he said.
“HMPV is similar to common cold. Fever, sore throat, nasal congestion, and fatigue are common symptoms of the virus. Treatments for infected individuals include medications such as ribavirin and azithromycin. Children and elderly individuals are at a higher risk of contracting this virus. High-risk groups, such as HIV patients, tuberculosis patients, dialysis patients, and those with COPD or asthma, are more likely to contract HMPV. However, there is no need to panic. As a precaution, we have set up a 20-bed ward and made medications available, just as we did during Covid-19,” added Dr Rambabu.
“Avoid coughing or sneezing in public places, and contact a doctor immediately if symptoms appear,” he added.
