The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M) has announced the launch of a BSc. programme in Mathematics, with an ambitious goal to produce at least 500 qualified Maths teachers annually. This initiative aligns with IIT Madras’s broader educational mission, further bolstered by the institute’s recent accolades in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2024.
IIT Madras has once again clinched the top spot in the ‘Overall’ category for the sixth consecutive year and maintained its first rank in the ‘Engineering’ category for the ninth year in a row. Additionally, the institute achieved a second-place ranking in the Research Institution category, as per the rankings released by the Union Ministry of Education.
IIT-M Director V Kamakoti expressed his gratitude to the 11,000 students and faculty members whose efforts contributed to this achievement. He highlighted that the ranking reflects various criteria, including graduate and PhD output, and the institute’s commitment to diversity, with 30 percent representation in student and gender equality.
Kamakoti also acknowledged the vital support from students, staff, alumni, and both state and central governments, which he credited for helping IIT Madras meet the nation’s educational needs. He noted that the past two years have seen the institute emphasise advanced courses in medical sciences, artificial intelligence, and data analytics. Initiatives like the sports excellence campaign, which brought national sports champions into the fold, also played a significant role in securing high ranks.
Looking ahead, Kamakoti revealed plans to expand the course offerings in Mathematics and BEd. programmes, with the aim of producing 500 teachers annually. He also congratulated Anna University on securing the top state ranking and suggested that NIRF should consider implementing ‘country-specific’ ranking lists in response to queries about the institute’s potential campus in South Africa.
