Thousands of doctors and nursing staff from across the country have called for a nationwide protest for 24 hours, starting at 6 am today, to express their anger over the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor at a government-run hospital in Kolkata last week. Making the announcement, the Indian Medical Association (IMA), the largest organisation of medical staff in the country, has pur forth five demands, including a thorough overhaul of the working and living conditions of resident doctors and a central law to check violence against healthcare professionals in workplaces.
However, the medical body clarified that all essential services will be maintained and casualties will be manned during the 24-hour-long protest. The IMA also said that routine OPDs will not function and elective surgeries will not be conducted during the nationwide protest. The withdrawal is across all the sectors wherever modern medicine doctors are providing service, they added. Stay tuned to India Today for the latest updates.
