Mysuru: City-based JSS Hospital established JSS Biorepository Centre (JSS BC) at its department of pathology on Wednesday.
Tata Institute of Genetic and Society director Dr Rakesh Mishra inaugurated the facility in the presence of Dr B Suresh, pro-chancellor of JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research, Dr Surinder Singh, vice-chancellor, and CG Betsurmath, executive secretary, JSS Mahavidyapeetha, Mysuru.
Dr Mishra delivered a special lecture on ‘Fight against rare disorders using genomics, genome editing and biotherapeutics.’ He spoke about the current scenario of rare genetic disorders and the challenges associated with their diagnosis and treatment. In addition, he spoke about recent developments in the areas of rare disease diagnosis and treatment.
He added that the Tata Institute of Genetics and Society (TIGS) is committed to working on rare diseases to bring the benefits of cutting-edge science to society in an economically affordable and socially acceptable manner.
Following the inauguration, Dr Sheela Devi, professor and head, department of pathology, and associate professor Dr Rekha explained the facilities and infrastructure available in the JSS Biorepository Centre.
The dignitaries highlighted the need for creating a biorepository and the benefits of such repositories in accelerating basic and translational research. They discussed how biorepositories could be used in disease diagnosis and treatment decisions.
