US Vice President Kamala Harris took a veiled dig at former President Donald Trump on Sunday, implying that he is a “coward” who focusses on downplaying his opponents. Harris made the remarks while appearing in a campaign rally in Pennsylvania along with his running mate Tim Walz, ahead of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

Addressing the gathering, Harris stated that in recent years, there has been a “perversion” in politics, where the acumen of a leader depends on how they “beat down” others.

Putting the leaders engaged in “beat-down” politics in the same bracket as “cowards,” the Democratic presidential candidate argued that true leadership is witnessed by lifting others up. Harris said, “anybody who’s about beating down other people is a coward.”

Although Harris did not directly name his political rival Trump, her remarks came a day after Trump called her a “radical” and a “lunatic” during his campaign rally in eastern Pennsylvania.

Recent opinion polls indicate that Harris is infusing the Democratic campaign with renewed vigour, significantly narrowing the gap with former President Donald Trump. This trend is visible not only on a national scale but also within several key battleground states, including Pennsylvania, which is poised to be critical in determining the outcome of the 2024 presidential election.

Harris, who stands to become the first woman president and the first of both black and Asian descent, if victorious in the November elections.

“There will be a lot that is about what I believe is a way forward, a new way forward, and bringing everyone along in that,” she told reporters outside a restaurant, news agency Reuters reported.
