Dr Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College where a trainee doctor was raped and killed, arrived at the CBI office in Kolkata for the third round of questioning on Sunday.

The CBI team who questioned Ghosh on Saturday for nearly 13 hours asked him to appear before the agency again as officials seek more information from him.

During the questioning on Saturday, CBI officials sought details about his actions after he learned of the woman’s death and whom he had contacted. The principal was also asked why he made the parents wait for nearly three hours, according to news agency PTI.

Following the incident, a room adjacent to the seminar hall was renovated amid the controversy, and Ghosh was questioned about who had ordered the work.

The CBI official who asked Ghosh to appear before them at 11 am stated that they have “a list of questions” to get answers from the former principal. The CBI has so far questioned over 20 people in connection with the incident and will be verifying their statements against Ghosh.

A 31-year-old post-graduate trainee doctor was raped and killed inside a seminar hall at RG Kar Hospital on August 9. The incident sparked massive outcry and waves of protest, leading Ghosh to resign from his post, taking “moral responsibility” for the incident.

However, within hours, he was appointed as the principal of Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital (CNMCH), further triggering outrage from the protesting students.

On August 16, Ghosh approached the Calcutta High Court seeking protection, claiming that he had been receiving life threats. The court has asked the state government to provide him with police protection.

Earlier, before his resignation, the High Court had asked him to go on leave amid protests by students who alleged that the medical college authorities had neglected their repeated pleas for increased security inside the hospital.
