Mamata Banerjee to march against Kolkata rape-murder. Derek O’Brien explains why

Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Derek O’ Brien stated that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will be holding a rally against the Kolkata rape and murder case on August 17 to demand the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to fast-track its probe.

Emphasising the public outrage, the TMC MP on his official X handle stated, “It is hard to conceive of a more bestial, heinous crime than the murder and rape of a young woman that took place in Kolkata.”

Listing out the reasons behind the Chief Minister’s scheduled rally, Derek O’Brien said that the central probe agency, which has taken over the case, must give daily updates on the investigation. He also said that the CBI must adhere to the deadline given by the Chief Minister to the Kolkata Police to wrap up the probe by Saturday.

“Kolkata Police have arrested one accused. Justice will happen only when the CBI nabs all involved and sends the case to a fast-track court,” he stated.

“The CBI taking over the case shouldn’t lead to it being quietly buried. The urgent need of the hour is swift justice and the harshest punishment for the culprits. No one who committed this barbaric act must be spared,” the Rajya Sabha MP added.

Meanwhile, as per the TMC leader, the Kolkata Police have arrested 19 people for vandalism at the hospital during the nationwide ‘Reclaim the Night’ protest. “Those who attacked and ransacked the hospital also need to be booked,” he added.

According to the police, a group of 40 to 50 people, under the garb of demonstrations, stormed into the hospital premises late on Wednesday night and vandalised property.
