Meet new SUV here to challenge Tata Nexon, Maruti Suzuki Fronx, Hyundai Creta, Honda Elevate. Not Tata Curvv

Citroen’s performance in the Indian market so far has been rather underwhelming. If we look at data from the industry body Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), the company sold merely 9,062 units in FY23 and even less in FY24 at 8,367 units. In FY25 (April-July), the company has garnered volumes of 1,593 units. However, the French automaker is expected to get a boost with the launch of the new Citroen Basalt SUV coupe.

The Citroen Basalt price starts at Rs 7.99 lakh and goes up to Rs 13.62 lakh (ex-showroom). Although the vehicle is a mid-size SUV if we look at the dimensions, but in terms of price, it is cheaper than even the sub-4metre compact SUVs.

For reference, the Tata Nexon is priced between Rs 8 lakh and Rs 15.10 lakh (ex-showroom), while the Maruti Suzuki Brezza sits in the price bracket of Rs 8.34 lakh to Rs 14.14 lakh (ex-showroom). Another top contender in the sub-4metre compact SUV space, the Kia Sonet, comes in the price range of Rs 7.99 lakh to Rs 15.77 lakh (ex-showroom).

When it comes to dimensions, the Citroen Basalt measures 4,352mm in length, 1,765mm in width and 1593mm in height. It has a 2,651mm long wheelbase. Size-wise, its rivals are the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Honda Elevate, Skoda Kushaq, Volkswagen Taigun, MG Astor and the upcoming Tata Curvv.

With the Citroen Basalt, buyers get an option for a bigger SUV at a relatively affordable price.

There are multiple powertrain options as well. There is a 1.2-litre PureTech 82 naturally aspirated petrol engine (82PS and 115Nm) and a 1.2-litre Gen-3 PureTech 110 turbo petrol engine (110PS and 190Nm/205Nm). You can pair the naturally aspirated unit with a 5-speed MT, while the turbo petrol unit gets 6-speed MT and 6-speed AT choices.

Considering the price range and segment, the Citroen Basalt is decently loaded with features as well. It boasts LED projector headlamps with LED DRLs, LED taillamps, 16-inch alloy wheels, 10.24-inch touchscreen infotainment system, 7-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, automatic climate control and wireless charger. MyCitroen Connect offers more than 40 connectivity features.

To ensure maximum safety, the Citroen Basalt has over 40 active and passive features as standard. Its body is claimed to be made using high-strength steel, advanced high-strength steel, and ultra-high-strength steel. The SUV has six airbags, electronic stability program, hill hold control and tyre pressure monitoring system, among others.
