Trichy: The Tamil Nadu MRB (Medical Services Recruitment Board) Nurses Empowerment Association on Monday held a demonstration in front of the Trichy district collector’s office, demanding safety for the women staff of the primary health centres (PHC) and govt hospitals in Trichy. The protest comes in the wake of an attempt by a 24-year-old man to rape a 40-year-old staff nurse of a PHC in Trichy district a few days back.

Protests were also held in front of Pudukottai and Perambalur district collectors’ offices by the members of the association condemning this incident. Protestors raised slogans demanding the district administration deploy night-time police patrol units near primary health centres, especially in rural areas.

The incident occurred on Oct 31, when a staff nurse was returning home after her working hours. A 24-year-old man, R Gokul, intercepted her near Siluvaippatti village and attempted to sexually assault her. Hearing her screams for help, locals rescued her. Based on a complaint from the woman, Trichy district police arrested Gokul, and remanded him in custody.
