Person holding constitutional post trying to destroy economy: Jagdeep Dhankhar

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, in a veiled dig at the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, stated that “a person holding a constitutional position” is attempting to destroy the Indian economy.

This came after Rahul Gandhi raised concerns about the integrity of India’s stock market following the latest Hindenburg report. He questioned why India’s markets regulator chief, Madhabi Puri Buch, had not resigned in light of the “explosive” revelations.

The Hindenburg report, which targets Buch, was refuted by the SEBI boss and the Adani group.

Addressing law students at the National Law University on Friday, the Vice President stated that he was “extremely worried” about the narrative, which, according to him, aimed at destroying the country’s economy.

“I got extremely worried when a person holding a constitutional position, just last week, declared in a well-publicised media campaign, beseeching the Supreme Court to suo-moto invoke jurisdiction to give wings to a narrative aimed at destroying our economy,” Dhankhar stated.

He urged the youth to neutralise forces that prioritise partisanship and self-interest over the nation’s well-being. “Our youth must equally rebuff and neutralise forces that keep partisan or self-interest above that of our nation. We cannot allow it. It happens; it is at the cost of our rise,” he stated.

Earlier, while referring to the Hindenburg report, Rahul Gandhi had called for the Supreme Court to intervene in the matter.

Without citing Rahul Gandhi, Dhankhar asked students to look around and find out if the top courts in other countries ever use “suo-motu cognisance.”.

“The jurisdiction of an institution is defined by the Indian Constitution, be it the legislature, be it the executive, be it the judiciary. The jurisdiction of the courts is decided. Look around the globe; look at the Supreme Court in the US, the highest court in the UK, or other formats. Has there been suo-moto cognisance even once? Has a remedy been created beyond what is provided in the Constitution? The Constitution provides original jurisdiction and appellate jurisdiction. It provides reviews as well. But we have a cure! If you do not focus on these nuances, I wonder who will do it. Think about it,” he stated.
