In the case of the rape and murder of a woman trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, a petition has been filed in the Supreme Court requesting to remove the picture, name and identity of the victim from various social media platforms.

The petition filed by complainants Kinnari Ghosh and Tushar Roy through their lawyer Rishi Kumar Singh Gautam, states that the reputation of the victim doctor’s family is being affected by revealing the picture of the murdered doctor and the identity of her family.

Almost all the major social media platforms have been made parties in the petition.

As per the petition filed in the top court, the Secretary of the Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Ministry of Women and Child Development, West Bengal government, alongside social media giants Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, Google, YouTube, and msn.com have also been made parties.

The bench of Chief Justice Dhananjay Yashwant Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Mishra will hear the case on August 20.

On August 9, a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor was raped and murdered while on duty at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. A civic volunteer was arrested in connection with the crime the next day.

Amid the ongoing protests over the incident, some unidentified miscreants entered the hospital premises shortly after midnight on Thursday and vandalised portions of the medical facility, where the body of a woman doctor was found last week.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) called a 24-hour strike in protest against the doctor’s rape-murder and the attack on RG Kar hospital on Saturday.
