A man with a long criminal record was shot in the leg by police in Tamil Nadu’s Kanyakumari district on Monday after he allegedly attacked and injured a police official with a knife when the cops tried to arrest him in connection with a snatching case.

According to the police, the accused, identified as R Selvam, attacked a man with a knife and snatched Rs 2,000 from him near the Alagupuram area in Kanyakumari district on Sunday.

After the incident, the police team traced Selvam’s locations and when Sub-Inspector (SI) Paulraj attempted to arrest him, he pulled out a knife and attacked Paulraj, injuring him in his left hand.

A police official also received injuries to his hand.

To control the situation, Inspector Adam Ali, fired a warning shot in the air, but Selvam persisted in attacking Palraj. Subsequently, Ali shot Selvam in his right leg.

After the incident, both Paulraj and Selvam were then taken to a hospital where they were undergoing treatment.

Selvam has 27 pending cases, including murder charges in several districts. Further investigation is underway.

Earlier in October last year, the Tamil Nadu Police also arrested a history-sheeter from Chengalpattu city. The police also opened fire at the accused after he attempted to flee after attacking the police.
