The Kalpana Chawla award for courage and daring enterprise was conferred upon A Sabeena, a nurse from Nilgiris District in Tamil Nadu, who took steps to save many lives during the Wayand landslides in Kerala.

During the landslides, the Mundakai-Suralmalai connecting bridge was damaged and eventually collapsed, leaving people stranded, unable to cross to safety and making rescue operations difficult to execute.

It was soon decided to make use of a zip-line to cross to the other side and initiate rescue operations. Sabeena stepped forward and volunteered to participate.

“I was working with an NGO in Nilgiris for the past three years. My chief told me that there was a landslide, and we had to go as we are the only ones nearby,” recalled Sabeena.

“Even when I reached the spot, people were running from the place fearing a landslide, but we didn’t want to leave, and we did first aid to the extent we could. To see the footage now, it is scary, but at that point I was only worried about the patients. I was scared that the bag carrying first aid might slip off my hands”, she said.

Incessant rainfall triggered multiple devastating landslides in Kerala’s Wayanad, hitting Chooralmala and Mundakai areas in the early hours of July 30. The disaster razed buildings across a large area, killing over 200. Over 100 people are still missing and over 1,500 people are living in survivor camps.
