Toddler dies after private nurse administers wrong injection in Jaisalmer, ET HealthWorld

Jaisalmer: A two-year-old girl, Rabina, died Saturday morning near the district govt hospital in Jaisalmer after being administered an injection by a private compounder at a medical store. Rabina, her relatives said, was suffering from mild cold and cough.

Her condition deteriorated rapidly and the child began frothing at the mouth after the injection. She was rushed to the district hospital where doctors declared her dead.

The tragedy sparked unrest among the family and local residents with angry residents forcing closure of the medical store. Police moved the body to the mortuary. The body was handed over to teh girl’s family after a post-mortem.

Ghazi Khan, Rabina’s relative said the family was approached by touts on their way to the govt hospital and the child’s mother was advised to seek treatment from a retired paediatrician, Rajendra Mehta, who examined the child and prescribed an injection. The injection was administered by Hempal, a registered nurse with five years’ experience.

Jawahir hospital PMO Chandan Singh Tanwar said Mehta examined the child at his house. City inspector Sawai Singh said the family filed a complaint against the medical shop owner, Mehta, and the nurse who administered the injection. The incident is currently registered as an accidental death.

Jaisalmer CMHO formed a committee to investigate the matter.
