Veteran French actor Alain Delon dies at 88

Internationally acclaimed French actor Alain Delon died at the age of 88. Known for his roles in classics including ‘Le Samourai’ and ‘Purple Noon’, the veteran actor died early on Sunday, August 18, per French media.

According to AFP, a statement by Delon’s family read, “Alain Fabien, Anouchka, Anthony, as well as [his dog] Loubo, are deeply saddened to announce the passing of their father. He passed away peacefully in his home in Douchy, surrounded by his three children and his family (sic).”

French President Emmanuel Macron, among others, paid tribute to Delon. Calling him not just a legendary actor but a ‘monument’, Macron shared his condolences on his official X handle. He wrote, “Alain Delon has played legendary roles and made the world dream. Melancholic, popular, secretive, he was more than a star (sic).”

Earlier this year, Alain Delon’s son, Anthony, revealed that his father had been diagnosed with B-cell lymphoma, a type of cancer. According to Al Jazeera, the actor’s declining health had led to public family disputes in recent months.
