On the eve of the 78th Independence Day on Wednesday, people from all walks of life came together to raise one united voice against injustices and atrocities meted out on the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital doctor, who was raped and murdered just days ago.

Protesters, mostly women, held a nation-wide demonstration under the ‘Reclaim the Night’ campaign. Several Indian cities, including Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai and many others within West Bengal saw thousands of protesters hit the streets demanding justice for the victims of the horror that unfolded at the RG Kar hospital.

However, there were ugly scenes to witness in Kolkata when an angry mob of protesters stormed the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital where the crime took place. Protesters broke police barricades, entered the hospital and vandalised hospital property.

The mob vandalised the emergency ward of the hospital and also some police vehicles parked outside.

Meanwhile, the police resorted to lathicharge and also fired tear gas shells to disperse the crowd.

Later, Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal said that a ‘malicious’ campaign by the media led to the protesters getting violent.

Vineet Goyal urges everyone not to spread rumours, saying that the police are verifying everything and constantly interrogating everyone who was there (at RG Kar Hospital).
