Visakhapatnam: Visakha Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS) has become the first govt hospital in the state to receive approval for liver transplantation, said its director, Dr K Rambabu.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday, the director said that the hospital performed many rare surgeries in 2024. “These included cochlear implant surgeries for both ears on a single individual, rare neuro-spinal surgeries, and the removal of complex tumours from the abdomen, among others. All of these surgeries were carried out free of charge,” said Dr Rambabu.
“In private and corporate hospitals, procedures like endoscopies, colonoscopies, ERCPs, and endo-ultrasonography typically cost between 3,000 and 30,000. However, at VIMS, these procedures are provided free of charge. Over the past six months, 1,050 endoscopies were performed. We also offer platelet-rich plasma treatments for joint pain relief at no charge. VIMS is conducting neuro-surgical treatments using endoscopic methods, which are not available at any other govt hospital in the state,” he added.
“Union govt has granted approval for the establishment of a secondary-level chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) medical management centre. An area of 1.8 acres was allocated within VIMS hospital for this centre, and construction of a three-storey building will begin soon,” added Dr Rambabu.
