Wrestler Bajrang Punia penned an emotional poem for Vinesh Phogat, who lost her case against the International Olympic Committee and United World Wrestling on Wednesday, 14 August. Just hours away from India’s Independence Day celebrations, Vinesh Phogat lost her plea for the joint silver medal at the Paris Olympics after she was disqualified for being overweight for her final bout by just 100 grams.

Vinesh returns from the Paris Olympics without a medal despite a spirited show where she convincingly reached the final of the women’s 50kg competition. The Indian wrestler was disqualified from the event on the day of her final bout against USA’s Sarah Ann Hildebrandt on 7 August.

No Silver Medal for Vinesh Phogat: Full Verdict

Bajarang took to Twitter late on 14 August and penned an emotional note for one on India’s top wrestlers. He penned a poem of six lines where he hailed Vinesh as the Kohinoor of India.

I believe your medal was snatched away in this darkness,
You are shining like a diamond in the whole world today.

The pride of world champion Hindustan
Rustam-e-Hind Vinesh Phogat you are the Kohinoor of the country.
The world is cheering your name everywhere

Those who want medals, can buy them for Rs. 15 each

The CAS released its operative verdict on Wednesday, 14 August, where it decided to uphold the decision of the International Olympic Committee. After this decision, Vinesh not only was not able to win silver but finished last in her category.

After the news of her disqualification was made public Vinesh had announced her retirement from wrestling via a Twitter post.

The CAS had delayed their verdict for the third time on Tuesday, 13 August on the Vinesh matter. The wrestler had earlier appealed for a joint silver medal in the Paris Olympics after she was dismissed on the day of her gold medal match. Vinesh had weighed-in at 50.100 kgs, which was 100 grams over the weight limit for her final bout. The Indian Olympic Association reacted to the court’s decision with disappointment and said that it would be seeking legal recourse on the Vinesh matter.
