Jaipur: A 23-year-old woman, a resident of Jaipur, who underwent a heart and lung transplant at Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital on Sunday, died late Tuesday night at the hospital. She was the first patient at SMS Hospital to receive both a heart and lungs from a brain dead donor, who was a resident of Jhalawar.
“There was no surgical error in the case, but she developed certain complications. Post-transplant, she developed disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), which is a rare but serious condition that causes abnormal blood clotting throughout the body,” said a senior SMS Medical College official.
The woman was suffering from Eisenmenger syndrome, a condition that occurs when a congenital heart defect causes abnormal blood circulation, resulting in pulmonary hypertension and lung damage.
“As her heart and lungs were both affected, she needed a heart and lungs transplant,” said the official.
The transplant was made possible by airlifting the donated organs from Jhalawar Medical College and bringing them to SMS Medical College on Sunday. SMS Medical College hired a helicopter for transportation of the organs. If taken by road, these organs would not have been able to reach on time. It was the first time that SMS Medical College used a helicopter for transporting human organs.
