Zeeshan Ali has stepped down as the coach of India’s Davis Cup team on Wednesday (August 14). India are now set to have a new coach when they lock horns with Sweden next month in Stockholm to be held from September 14 to 15.
“I have resigned as the coach of the Davis Cup team,” Zeeshan Ali told PTI. Back in 2013, Zeeshan had replaced Nandan Bal as the coach of the team before their tie against South Korea in New Delhi.
Zeeshan also went down the memory lane and talked about the highlights of working as a player, coach and captain of the Davis Cup team.
“I felt that I have already achieved whatever there was to achieve as far as Davis Cup was concerned,” Zeeshan added.
Back in February, India played their last match in the Davis Cup when they defeated Pakistan 4-0 in Islamabad during the World Group I play-offs.
Back in 2005, India last faced Sweden in Delhi and lost 1-3. Sweden, on the other hand, will be looking to bounce back after losing 1-3 to Brazil.
Zeeshan Ali’s career in brief
Zeeshan was appointed as the non-playing captain of the Indian Davis Cup team for the historic tie against Pakistan. The appointment came due to the absence of regular skipper Rohit Rajpal, who could not travel to Islamabad due to personal reasons.
Zeeshan has played a significant role in the Indian Davis Cup setup, working with notable players like Leander Paes, Anand Amritraj, and Mahesh Bhupathi. He has also been the captain of the Indian Fed Cup team in 2015 and is currently the Director of Tennis at the National Tennis Centre in Delhi.
Zeeshan’s experience and familiarity with the players will be crucial in guiding the team to a strong performance in this tie.
